Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Night Blue Goes Back To The Origin

Continuing the aesthetic of the 1972 model, the dials of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches are available in the classic “Night Blue, Cloud 50” colorway, with either the “Petite Tapisserie” or “Grande Tapisserie” motifs. The unique “Night Blue” colorway was developed by Geneva dial manufacturer Stern Frères by immersing the dials in a galvanic bath. This process requires a rigorous color matching process, and the control of the plating time and temperature is also important. If removed too early or too late, the dial will turn purple or black. Once the desired color is achieved, the dial is coated with a thin layer of varnish and mixed with a few drops of black (N°50) to form a protective layer. The color gets its name from the cloud-like effect created when the black droplets drip into the protective layer of liquid varnish. Today, the “Night Blue” hue can be produced through the physical vapor deposition (PVD) process to ensure a more consistent color scheme across the entire collection.

The watch also inherits another aesthetic feature of the Royal Oak series: the Tapisserie checkered machine-engraved dial. Most of the dials of the new 2022 models with a diameter of 34, 37, 38 or 41 mm are decorated with the "Grande Tapisserie" checkered pattern. The production of this checkered pattern requires rare professional skills that are no longer taught in watchmaking schools today, and it can only be achieved through complex processes. Using an ancient engraving machine, hundreds of tiny three-dimensional squares are engraved on the thin metal base of the dial, like mini pyramids with their tops truncated, forming a regularly arranged matrix pattern. At the same time, tens of thousands of tiny diamond quilts are cut in the fine grid grooves between the squares, and all four inner surfaces can reflect light, forming a fine "woven" texture, presenting a pattern like a brocade. The completion of this production process requires the ultimate flexibility and precision of the craftsman.

In 1998, Audemars Piguet decided to replace the previous “Petite Tapisserie” with the more majestic and recognizable “Grande Tapisserie” pattern. The two patterns are made using the same process, but the difference is that the size of the basic pattern that makes up the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern has almost doubled, which means that the number of “pyramids” has been reduced from 700 to 380, taking the Royal Oak 39mm “Jumbo” watch as an example. In 1999, the Royal Oak series first launched three watches with the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern. This new design was a great success as soon as it came out. By 2000, almost all Royal Oak watches were decorated with the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern, and the “Petite Tapisserie” pattern disappeared completely until it returned again in 2012 on the 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak series.
